Green Burials At Wildwood Cemetery

Green Burials are allowed at Wildwood Cemetery in all sections.   Since Green Burials do not involve chemicals, it is important for you to think about your funeral preferences ahead of time.  Most of the local Funeral Homes are willing to work with you.

In a green burial the body is not embalmed, although there are "green" embalming fluids available if that is important to you.  The burial container is made of biodegradable materials (soft wood, cardboard, wicker) or the body is wrapped in a shroud. There is no vault or cement grave liner and the container or body is placed directly on the soil to biodegrade naturally. Usually, the headstone or marker is made from indigenous material.  We do not have specific rules about the container, but the funeral homes have different requirements.

Green Burial Massachusetts is located in Greenfield, MA and has produced a brochure that will probably answer most of your questions:

Green Burial = No embalming, no vault and everything that goes into the ground with the body is biodegradable.
